Yet Another Zombie Survivors Beginner Guide — Your First Two Hours
Beginner guide for Yet Another Zombie Survivors 1.0: who to start with, which upgrades to pick, when to recruit, how synergies work and what to unlock first.
Who should I start with?
Every run in Yet Another Zombie Survivors starts with a single Survivor. Over the course of the run you can recruit up to two more, ending with a three-Survivor squad whose weapons and abilities combine into cross-Survivor synergies. The full roster has nine Survivors: SWAT, Tank, Medic, Pyro, Ghost, Huntress, Engineer, Mechanic and Ranger.
The honest answer for your first runs: pick whoever appeals to you and finish the run. The early game is forgiving enough that learning the loop matters more than the “right” pick, and Version 1.0’s Survivor missions actively reward you for playing everyone. Once you have a few runs behind you, check the tier list and best team pages for data-driven picks — and note that Ranger, the ninth Survivor added in 1.0, only unlocks at Survival Level 175, so he is a long-term goal, not a starter.
Which upgrades should I pick?
The single most common beginner mistake in bullet heaven games is spreading upgrades thin. Instead:
- Commit to your starting weapon first. A fully developed main weapon carries the first half of a run far better than five half-level options.
- Add abilities that support that weapon rather than starting a second damage plan.
- Leave room for your recruits. Once you add a second and third Survivor, their weapons join your build — upgrades you take should feed the squad’s shared synergies, not fight them.
Think of each run as building one machine, not collecting parts.
When do I recruit another Survivor?
As early as the run gives you the chance. Recruiting is the defining mechanic of YAZS compared to other survivors-likes: a second Survivor is not just more damage, it is a whole new set of weapons and abilities that can combine with yours. A full three-Survivor squad multiplies your coverage of the screen and unlocks the cross-Survivor synergies the game is built around.
If a run is going badly, a recruit is usually the fastest way to stabilize it. If it is going well, a recruit is how you turn a good run into a broken one.
How do synergies work?
Weapons and abilities from different Survivors combine into cross-Survivor synergies — this is the core system of the game. When you recruit, you are not picking a companion, you are picking the next ingredient of your build.
Practical approach for beginners:
- Recruit Survivors whose kits complement your starter instead of duplicating it.
- Read what each new ability actually does before taking it; synergy requires the right pieces, not just more pieces.
- Once you understand the basics, the synergies hub and the full synergy list map out what combines with what.
What should I unlock first?
Progression in YAZS continues between runs through unlocks and skill trees, so deaths are never wasted. Priorities for the first hours:
- Survival Level. Many unlocks key off it — most famously Ranger at Survival Level 175.
- The Version 1.0 mission structure. The 15 Main Story missions are the backbone of progression and carry most of the 64 story achievements.
- More Survivors. Every unlocked Survivor is a new build option and a new set of personal quests.
Which stats matter?
Damage and survivability are the obvious two — you need enough damage to thin the horde and enough staying power to survive being surrounded. Beyond that, the stat that generates the most questions is Luck: it is a real stat in the game, and players debate how much it affects drops and critical hits. We keep an honest, evidence-separated breakdown on the Luck page.
What does Luck do?
Short answer: Luck is a stat you will be offered on items and upgrades, and the community pays particular attention to it on Ranger. The exact mechanics are still being verified, so we do not print invented numbers here — read what Luck does and whether you should take it for the full picture.
When do new maps unlock?
Version 1.0 added the Bio Lab map alongside Boss Rush mode and the Survivors’ Camp. New maps and modes open up as you progress through the game’s unlock structure rather than being available all at once.
What should I do in my first two hours?
A simple checklist:
- Finish your first full run with any Survivor — learn the loop, do not chase a perfect build.
- Recruit early in run two and feel what a three-Survivor squad does to your damage.
- Start the Main Story missions and let them steer your progression.
- Spend your between-run progression immediately; hoarding unlocks slows you down.
- After a few runs, read the best builds and synergies pages and try building toward one specific synergy on purpose.
