Yet Another Zombie Survivors Best Team Compositions

The best YAZS teams for every mode: overall, beginner, Boss Rush, critical, elemental and survival squads, plus who should lead and who to recruit.

In Yet Another Zombie Survivors you never fight alone for long. You start each run with one Survivor, recruit up to two more during the run, and end up with a three-Survivor squad whose weapons and abilities combine into cross-Survivor synergies. Picking the right trio — and the right order to recruit them — matters more than any single upgrade choice.

How Do We Evaluate a Team?

A great YAZS team answers three questions well:

  • Can the lead survive alone? Your first Survivor has to carry the early game until recruitment opens up. A team that only works at full strength is a trap.
  • Do the recruits cover the lead’s weaknesses? A fragile damage lead wants durability or sustain behind it; a slow frontline lead wants damage dealers.
  • Do the three kits synergize? The synergy system is what separates a good squad from a broken one. We prioritize teams with clear, achievable synergy plans over three individually strong Survivors with no interaction.

The same logic powers our Survivor tier list and the build recommendations on the best builds hub.

What Is the Best Overall Team?

The best overall team pairs a self-sufficient lead with one damage-oriented and one support-oriented recruit, so the squad has wave clear, single-target damage and staying power at every stage of a run.

What Is the Best Beginner Team?

Beginners should build for forgiveness, not ceiling:

  1. Lead with the Survivor you control most comfortably. Early deaths end runs before team composition matters.
  2. Recruit sustain second. A Medic-style support pick smooths out positioning mistakes while you learn wave patterns.
  3. Recruit simple damage third. Straightforward damage abilities beat combo-dependent setups while you are still learning what synergies exist.

The beginner guide covers recruitment timing in detail, and our tier list’s beginner section ranks Survivors by how easy they are to start with.

What Is the Best Boss Rush Team?

Boss Rush, new in Version 1.0, is a chain of boss fights, so the best Boss Rush team trades wave-clear for burst: a lead with reliable single-target damage, recruits that add burst windows and survivability, and synergies that come online fast, because there are no long farming waves to scale through.

Specific boss-killing trios are being tested now; we will name the exact squad here once the community testing settles.

What Is the Best Critical Team?

A critical team stacks critical chance and damage across all three Survivors so the whole squad spikes instead of one carry. Survivors whose kits read as precision- or burst-oriented — Huntress and Ghost are the usual community picks — anchor this style, and the open question is how much Luck the squad should take, since players widely suspect Luck feeds critical output. That interaction is still unconfirmed; see Luck Explained for what we know.

What Is the Best Elemental Team?

An elemental team commits all three Survivors to the same damage-over-time plan so effects stack and spread across the horde. Pyro reads as the natural anchor for fire-based elemental play, and the recruits should extend the same effect type rather than dilute it. Check the synergy database for confirmed elemental cross-Survivor interactions as verification progresses.

What Is the Best Survival Team?

For long runs and late-game scaling, the best survival team inverts the usual priority: durability and sustain first, damage second. Tank as the frontline anchor and Medic as the sustain recruit is the classic community template, with the third slot going to whichever damage dealer scales best into late waves. This is also the style most players lean on while pushing toward Ranger’s unlock at Survival Level 175.

Which Survivor Should Lead?

Your lead is the Survivor you start the run with, and the choice is about the early game, not the endgame. Lead with a Survivor that:

  • Clears early waves without help, so you reach recruitment alive.
  • Fits the team’s game plan — the lead usually sets the damage type or role the recruits build around.
  • You personally pilot well, because a run that ends at minute three has no team at all.

Our tier list ranks Survivors specifically as team leaders and as recruits, because the two jobs value different things.

Which Two Survivors Should You Recruit?

Recruit to cover weaknesses, in this order:

  1. First recruit — patch the lead’s biggest hole. Fragile lead, take durability or sustain. Slow lead, take damage.
  2. Second recruit — complete the synergy plan. By the third slot you know which upgrades the run has offered; pick the Survivor whose abilities activate the strongest available synergy.

Which Synergies Make a Team Work?

A team “works” when its three kits stop being three separate kits. The cross-Survivor synergy system combines weapons and abilities from different Survivors into new effects, and the best squads are built backwards from one or two target synergies. We are documenting every confirmed synergy in the synergy database, including which Survivor pair and which ability each one requires.
